The Thunderbird

Updated: Jul 12, 2019

"Found on Native American totems, pottery and cave art, the Thunderbird brings the power of the thunder and great storms, with the ability to shoot lightning from its eyes when it appears in the sky. Native peoples tell stories of these creatures having a ten to twelve-foot wingspan, with curling horns and teeth in their beak. In some stories, their heads are featherless. Mount Katahdin in Maine is said to be the Thunderbirds’ home in the Appalachians. Native oral traditions also speak of medicine men who had the ability to shapeshift into these winged predators.
